DOVER, Del. - Wesley College and Penn State Berks played to a 2-2 tie through 10 innings before darkness forced the umpires to call the game.
The Wolverines (1-0-1) plated a pair of runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Stu Madden (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) and a double by Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown).
The Nittany Lions (0-0-1) tied the game up in the top of the sixth when Seth Schultz scored on a passed ball and Aaron Klaptosky stroked an RBI ground out.
Before that, Wesley's Bobby Buttafogo (Kennett Square, Pa./Kennett) and PSU Berks' Brad Swavely kept the offenses off balance. Buttafogo allowed just two hits and three walks, while striking out six in his collegiate debut. He was charged with both Nittany Lion runs. Swavely scattered three hits and three walks over five innings, while allowing both Wesley runs.
The two bullpens combined to toss 9.2 scoreless innings to finish the game.
Madden, Murphy, Alex Carter (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney), and Geoff Kimmel (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) had two hits apiece for the Wolverines. Pat Griffin and Michael Ference had multi-hit efforts for Penn State Berks.
The game was the first in a five-game weekend for Wesley. The Wolverines play host to Neumann for a Saturday doubleheader before Albright visits on Sunday for another twinbill. First pitch both days is slated for noon.
