Rally Falls Short Against Albright
DOVER, Del. - Wesley scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, but it was not enough as Albright claimed a 6-4 win over the Wolverines in non-conference action.
The Lions (1-0) scored twice in the third on a passed ball a single by Jason Dunkelburger. Wesley (2-2-1) tied it up in the fourth, however. RBI singles by Alex Carter (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) and Tyler Burns (Dover, Del./Dover) brought home Stu Madden (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) and Scott Marshall (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial).
Albright struck back with two runs in their next at bat and two more in the seventh. In the fifth, Shane Stein had an RBI single and a throwing error allowed a second run to score on the play. The Lions scored twice in the seventh despite not getting a hit, as two walks and an error allowed the lead to grow to 6-2.
Burns and Bill Hodgdon (Dennisville, N.J./Middle Township) led off the Wesley ninth with back-to-back doubles to cut the lead to 6-3. A wild pitch moved Hodgdon to third and the freshman scored on a sacrifice fly by classmate Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner). Tim Flannery, who pitched the final four innings for the Lions, retired the final two batters, however, to close the game.
Burns and Carter had two hits apiece for the Wolverines.
Colin Warner (Dagsboro, Del./Indian River) took the loss for Wesley, allowing six runs - just three earned - in six innings. The junior surrendered eight hits and three walks, but struck out 10.
Albright's Casey Lawrence scattered three hits and a walk, while striking out eight to notch the win in five innings of work. Flannery picked up the save.
Wesley will look to rebound on Saturday and Sunday, February 21 and 22, when CCNY visits for a three game set.
