Long Ball Powers Wesley Past CCNY
DOVER, Del. - Wesley College's Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) broke a 1-1 tie with a solo shot in the third and Grant Morlock (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) blasted a three-run bomb in the seventh as the Wolverines cruised past CCNY 8-2.
Morlock finished the game 4-for-4 and also stole a base, while Murphy collected three hits.
The duo gave starting pitcher Mike Dombrosky (Bridgeport, N.J./Paulsboro) all the run support he would need. The junior lasted 7.2 innings, scattering four hits and three walks, while striking out six.
Wesley (5-2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Alex Carter (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) doubled off the leftfield fence to bring home Murphy.
CCNY (0-6) tied it up in the third when Paul Rojas walked and later scored on a ground out by Pat Barry.
In the bottom of the frame, however, Murphy deposited a 3-2 pitch from Brian Hopstock over the leftfield wall for his first homer of the year.
The score stayed that way until Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) led off the seventh with a single and scored on a base hit by Murphy. Carter scored later in the inning on an error that would have ended the inning. After Tyler Burns (Dover, Del./Dover) walked, Morlock went the opposite way for a three-run home run and an 8-1 lead.
The Beavers got one run back in the eighth on an RBI single by Armando Wellington.
Bill Hodgdon (Dennisville, N.J./Middle Township) doubled and stole three bases in the game for Wesley.
The win wrapped up a three-game weekend series in which the Wesley pitching staff held the Beavers to just a .130 batting average.
The Wolverines open conference play on Wednesday, February 25 with a single nine-inning game against Salisbury at Bob Reed Field. The first pitch is scheduled for 2:30 PM.
