MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Wesley College stole 13 bases for the second straight game - including a school record six by Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) - in a 15-3 win over Lehman on the Wolverines' final game on spring break.
Freshman D.J. Keckler (Fallston, Md./Fallston) had another stellar outing, allowing just two earned runs in seven innings to pick up the win. The reigning NCBWA Division III Pitcher of the week struck out 10, while allowing just six hits and a walk.
Wesley (8-7-1) used sacrifice flies by Scott Marshall (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) and Tyler Burns (Dover, Del./Dover) and an RBI single by Stu Madden (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy) to take a 3-0 lead after two innings of play.
An error by the Wolverines allowed Lehman (0-1) to get on the board in the third inning, but Wesley answered back with another sacrifice fly, this one by Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner), and an RBI base knock by Murphy in the fourth for a 5-1 lead.
Madden and Marshall picked up RBIs in the sixth to stretch the lead to 7-1, but Gilbert Garcia brought the Lightning to within four runs at 7-3 in the bottom of the sixth.
Wesley broke the game open in the seventh, scoring runs on a passed ball, an error, a double play and a wild pitch before a Bill Hodgdon (Dennisville, N.J./Middle Township) RBI double stretched the Wolverines' advantage to 12-3.
A two-run error by Lehman in the ninth and a groundout by Matt Trate (Bear, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) plated Wesley's final three runs in the ninth.
Murphy went 3-for-4 in his record-setting effort and scored three times. Hodgdon had his first career four-hit effort, while Madden and Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) also had multi-hit efforts.
Madden added three steals in the game and Hodgdon and Benedict added two each.
The win concluded the Wolverines' spring break trip to Myrtle Beach. Wesley returns home for a doubleheader against Richard Stockton on Sunday, March 8.
