Wesley Splits with No. 12 York (Pa.)
YORK, Pa. - Wesley College scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh and held on for a 6-5 win in the opener, but fell 6-1 in the nightcap of a doubleheader at No. 12 York (Pa.).
The Wolverines jumped ahead 3-1 in the fourth inning of the first game when Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) hit a three-run home run over a 14-foot wall in the outfield, his third of 2009.
The Spartans tied it in the fifth on a two-run double by Mike Connolly. A sacrifice fly by Geoff Kimmel (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) in the sixth put Wesley ahead, but the lead lasted only until the bottom of the inning when York again tied it up with an RBI double. This time it was Rob Andrews driving in a run that made it 4-4 heading into the seventh.
Reshetar led off the top of the inning with his third hit of the day, a single up the middle. After the Wolverines bunted him over to second, he scored on a double by Greg McKee (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) for a 5-4 advantage with one out. McKee advanced to third on a wild pitch and, after Alex Carter (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) walked to put runners on the corners, scored on a sacrifice fly by Stu Madden (Lanhorne, Pa./Neshaminy).
The Spartans made it interesting in the bottom of the frame. A run scoring single by Ryan Poff cut the lead to one and put the tying run on first with one out. Kyle McGuire (Hartly, Del./Polytech), however, induced a double play to end the game and earn the save.
Wesley made good use of its eight baserunners in the contest, stranding just two on base.
Kyle Cook went 4-for-4 for York and scored three times.
DJ Keckler (Fallston, Md./Fallston) pitched the first 6.1 innings to improve to 5-1 for the Wolverines. McGuire's save was his second of the season.
Wesley also handed the Spartans' Jason Christenberry his first loss of the season.
In the second game, Chris Frankenfield tossed a four-hitter in his first start of the year. The junior walked thre and struck out four, while limiting Welsey to just one unearned run.
Connelly and Chris Young each hit a two run homer in the game for the Spartans. Young's blast came in the second inning to give York a 2-1 lead. Connelly's came as part of a three-run fifth inning that extended the lead to 5-0.
After the Spartans scored another run in the sixth, Madden doubled home Tyler Burns (Dover, Del./Dover) for the Wolverines only run of the game.
Colin Warner (Dagsboro, Del./Indian River) took the loss for Wesley, allowing five runs, three earned, in five innings. He struck out four and allowed five hits and a walk.
Madden had two hits for Wesley, while Cook and Young did the same for York.
Wesley finishes its conference regular season with three games next week against St. Mary's (Md.).
