Baseball Sweeps the Seahawks
Box Scores Game One | Game Two
Dover, Del. - The Wesley College baseball team earned some well deserved confidence after sweeping CAC rival St. Mary's College (Md.) in their final series before entering the 2009 championship tournament. The Wolverines defeated the Seahawks 11-0, and 9-4 in two strong pitching performances by Ryan Doran (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) and Mike Dombrosky (Bridgeport, N.J./Paulsboro).
Game One.
Ryan Doran was one out away from a no-hitter before St. Mary's pitcher Blake Beaudoin wrecked it with a single to right field in the top of the seventh inning. In the end, Doran gave up only two hits and three walks in a solid outing for the Wolverines.
Doran was helped by a strong Wesley offense at the plate. The Wolverines scored three runs in the 1st and four more in the second to take a commanding 7-0 lead.
In the first, Wesley took advantage of 5 walks and a hit batter to earn three runs off Seahawk starter Mikel Iraola. Iraola would not come back out in the second.
The new pitcher, Adam Schenk, did little to stop Wesley's offense. He was greeted to the field with a lead off double by Stu Madden (Langhorne, Pa./Neshaminy), who then took third on a wild pitch.
The next batter, Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) walked, then stole second putting two runners in scoring position. Grant Morlock (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) hit a two run single then advanced to third on a double by Geoff Kimmel (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence).
Morlock scored on wild pitch which also brought Kimmel to third. Kimmel then scored on a single by Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) to give Wesley four runs in the bottom of the second.
Wesley added two in the bottom of the third off a two run double by Kimmel.
The Wolverines continued to batter the Seahawk pitching adding runs in the 5th and 6th innnings for a decisive 11-0 victory.
Game Two.
What started as a pitchers dual, the Wolverines pulled away with a four run 5th inning to earn a 9-4 victory over the Seahawks in the night cap.
Wesley's pitcher, Mike Dombrosky pitch 5 solid innings giving up only two runs on two hits with 1 strike out.
St. Mary's pitcher, Barrett Enix was also cruising along nicely until the bottom of the fourth inning, when Wesley's Geoff Kimmel hit a two run homer over the left field fence at Bob Reed Field.
Enix recovered with a strike out and a ground out to end the inning, but he was clearly shaken by the homer.
The Seahawks showed some life in the top of the 5th also using the long ball as Mikel Iraola hit a two run homer to almost the same spot as Kimmel.
Enix returned to the mound in the 5th, but would not make it through the inning. Wesley manufactured a two-out four-run rally to break the game open.
Wesley catcher, Billy Crowe (Newark, Del./Salesianum) got on base with a single, then advance to second on a fielders choice. Crowe then scored on a double by Kevin Murphy who subsequently score on a single by Morlock.
Kimmel continued the hit barage with a single, at which time Enix was pulled for Stephon Dingle. But Dingle walked the next batter allowing the Wolverines to load the bases. Bill Hodgdon (Dennisville, N.J./Middle Township) stepped to the plate and smacked a two run single scoring Kimmel and Morlock.
Wesley continued to knock around Dingle in the bottom of the sixth inning. An opposite field double by Morlock scored Madden and Murphy, then Kimmel singled in Morlock for another two out rally.
St. Mary's scored runs in the top of the 6th and 7th innings, but could not make up the difference.
Wesley awaits word of seeding for the CAC tournament.
