Shoremen Sink Wesley
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Wesley College jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Washington scored four times in the third inning and went on to win 9-3 in a non-conference contest among Delmarva Peninsula rivals.
The Wolverines (24-15-1) scored twice in the second inning without getting a hit. Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech) walked and later scored on a wild pitch and an error. Greg McKee (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) drove home Scott Marshall (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Memorial) later in the inning with an RBI ground out.
Three Wesley errors the following inning opened the door for the Shoremen (13-16). Ryan Normoyle had an RBI single to drive home the tying run after the first error of the inning allowed Washington's first run to score. Later in the inning after two more miscues, an RBI ground out by Greg Perret and a bases loaded walk by John Rolewicz plated base runners.
Normoyle reached base in the fourth, stole second, moved to third on a ground out and came home on a wild pitch for a 5-2 Shoremen led.
Ben Jardot's RBI single and a sacrifice fly by Doug Lutz stretched the lead to 7-2 through five innings of play. Lutz added another sacrifice fly in the seventh and Normoyle added an RBI single for a 9-2 lead.
Wesley answered back in the eighth when James Overstreet (Dover, Del./Dover) doubled and scored on a single by Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown). The Shoremen, however, turned to reliever Matt Swanson who closed the game with 1.2 perfect innings.
Jardot led all players with three hits, while Normoyle added a pair as Washington scored nine runs on just eight hits.
Joe Coveney picked up the win with 7.1 innings of four hit ball to improve to 2-2. He allowed all three Wesley runs, two earned with three walks and four strikeouts.
Matt Faulkner (Milford, Del./Milford) took his first loss of the year to fall to 3-1. He allowed the first six runs, four earned, on four hits and two walks while fanning three in four innings. Chris Koch (Hyattsville, Md./Bishop McNamara) and Kyle McGuire (Hartly, Del./Polytech) combined to toss a scoreless 1.1 innings
Wesley will wrap up the regular season with a single game against No. 21 Shenandoah on April 25 at 2:00 PM.
