YORK, Pa. - Wesley scored five runs over the final three innings to steal a 6-4 win at CAC rival York (Pa.).
After single runs in the seventh and eighth clipped the Spartans' (2-6, 0-3 CAC) lead to 4-3, Wesley (5-4, 2-1 CAC) scored three times in the top of the ninth for the win.
Ryan Ziolkowski (Fallston, Md./Fallston) led off the ninth with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Billy Crowe (Newark, Del./Salesianum) reached on a fielder's choice that York failed to record an out on and Steven Jacobs (Aston, Pa./Garnet Valley) walked to load the bases. Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) followed with a two-run single to put the Wolverines up 5-4. An RBI ground out by Grant Morlock (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) brought home an insurance run.
Kyle McGuire (Hartly, Del./Polytech) followed with a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his first win of the year.
York had led from the get-go as a Rick Shumway double in the first inning gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead and two more scored on a third inning single by Mike Conolly. Wesley answered back with an RBI single by Benedict to cut it to 3-1 in the fifth. York tacked on its final run in the sixth, compliments of a run scoring single by Matt Monti.
Wesley started its comeback in the seventh when Ziolkowski scored on a fielder's choice and in the following inning Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) scored on a ground out to make it 4-3 heading into the ninth.
Wesley's comeback negated a strong outing by the Spartans' Chris Frankenfield, who tossed seven innings, scattering five hits and two walks, while striking out five. Tommy Moran surrendered three runs in a third of an inning to take the loss.
Ryan Doran (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) got the start for the Wolverines and allowed four runs in 5.2 innings on nine hits and three walks.
Benedict drove in three runs and had a pair of hits in the game. Ziolkowski also had a pair of hits and he and Crowe each scored twice.
For York, Dustin Worthman collected four hits.
The Wolverines and Spartans complete the season series when York visits Dover for a doubleheader on March 13.
