Wesley Sweeps St. Mary's (Md.)
ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. - An eighth inning sacrifice fly by Steven Jacobs (Aston, Pa./Garnet Valley) lifted Wesley to a 3-2 win in the opener and the Wolverines took the second game from St. Mary's (Md.) 7-2 to complete the sweep.
An RBI double by Seth Hastings (Seaford, Del./Sussex Tech) in the fourth inning of the first game put Wesley (16-10, 12-6 CAC) ahead 1-0. The Seahawks (9-21, 4-14 CAC) tied it up in the fifth on a triple by Justin Rabon that drove in a run.
Jacobs reclaimed the lead for the Wolverines in the sixth with a single that drove home Greg McKee (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney). St. Mary's Matt Baden tied it up in the bottom half of the inning, however, with a squeeze play to score Jon Gill.
Both teams stranded runners in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
McKee led off the eight with a double and moved to third on an infield single by Hastings. Jacobs followed with a fly ball to center that brought home McKee for the winning run.
Kyle McGuire (Hartly, Del./Polytech) pitched a perfect eighth and was credited with the win in relief, his fifth of the season. Michael Bazoge (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) pitched 5.1 innings to start the game, allowing just a pair of unearned runs, one of which scored after he left the game.
Hastings had three hits in the game, while Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) added a pair.
Mike Victory took the loss for the Seahawks.
Triples were the theme in the second game as Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) tied the single season record with his fifth of the year and Grant Morlock (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) tied the career mark with the 11th of his career.
Murphy also tripled in the game, scoring the game's first run on an RBI double by Tyler Burns (Dover, Del./Dover) in the fourth inning. St. Mary's, however, got a two-run single off the bat of Ian Simpson-Shelton to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning.
Benedict tripled in a run in the fifth and Morlock scored later in the inning on an error after stealing third to make it 3-2 in favor of the Wolverines.
Wesley broke the game open the following inning with three runs, all of which scored with two outs. Jacobs singled home McKee for the first run of the inning and Billy Crowe (Newark, Del./Salesianum) followed with an RBI single, with a second run scoring on an error on the play.
The Wolverines added another run in the seventh on an RBI single by Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech).
All the offense was more than enough for starter DJ Keckler (Fallston, Md./Fallston), who limited the Seahawks to just four hits and three walks in a complete game effort. He struck out four and retired the final eight batters of the game.
Gill took the loss, allowing three runs in 4.1 innings of work.
Wesley currently sits in a tie for second at 12-6 atop a crowded CAC leaderboard. The Wolverines are tied with York (Pa.) for second place, with Salisbury in first at 12-4. The Sea Gulls must still play a doubleheader against 10-4 Mary Washington on Sunday, April 11. Should the Eagles win, all four teams would tie at 12-6.
