SALISBURY, Md. - RBI singles in the top of the ninth by Tyler Burns (Dover, Del./Dover) and Greg McKee (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney) lifted Wesley College to a 7-5 win over No. 12 Salisbury in the second round of the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament.
The Sea Gulls (23-7) scored once in the bottom of the ninth and brought the tying run to the plate, but Kyle McGuire (Hartly, Del./Polytech) forced a fly out to earn his sixth win of the year.
The Wolverines (17-11) had scored first on a two-run double in the top of the first inning off the bat of Bryan Reshetar (Newark, Del./Hodgson Vo-Tech). Salisbury loaded the bases in the bottom half of the inning, but Michael Bazoge (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) pitched his way out of the jam unscathed.
Reshetar's first home run of the year in the third plated two more runs as the Wolverines went ahead 4-0.
After his rocky first inning, Bazoge settled in and held the Sea Gulls without a hit for the next five innings. Salisbury got a run in the fifth, when Bill Morton walked and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. Brad Baylis knocked him in with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-1 in favor of Wesley.
Baylis hit a solo home run in the seventh to cut the Wolverines lead to just two runs. Wesley's pitching got a little wild in the as the Wolverines hit three batters and walked another to allow Salisbury to score twice on just one hit and tie the game at 4-4.
Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) singled to lead off the ninth inning and moved to third on a double by Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown). The Sea Gulls then intentionally walked Reshetar to load the bases with one out. Burns followed with a two-run single to left and McKee followed with a run scoring base hit to center and the Wolverines carried a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Mike Celenza led off with an infield single and scored on a two-out double by Chad Wolfe to cut it to a two-run game and bring the tying run to the plate. But McGuire got catcher Ryan Smith to fly out to right field to end the game.
Reshetar finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, two walks and four RBIs. Burns was 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs. Benedict, Murphy and Grant Morlock (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) also had two hits each.
Bazoge allowed just two hits in six innings and pitched around five walks to give up just one run.
Baylis and Wolfe each had two hits for the Sea Gulls.
Kyle Judson fanned 10 Wesley batters in 6.1 innings, but allowed four runs on seven hits and three walks. Mark Peterson was charged with the loss after allowing three runs in two innings of relief.
It is the second straight year Wesley won a second round game against the Sea Gulls while facing elimination. Last season, the Wolverines picked up a 4-2 at Salisbury to advance to the championship weekend.
With the victory, Wesley stays alive to head back to Salisbury for the third round on Saturday, April 17. The Wolverines will square off with York (Pa.) at 12:30 PM.
