TUSCON, Ariz. - Three Wesley College players have been selected as Players to Watch by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper for 2011.
Senior second baseman Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown), junior shortstop Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) and junior right handed pitcher DJ Keckler (Fallston, Md./Fallston) all received the accolade.
Murphy was an ABCA All-South Region Second Team member after a record setting season for the Wolverines. The second baseman set single season marks in hits (71), runs batted in (63) and total bases (108). The junior led in the Capital Athletic Conference in RBIs, stolen bases (22) and fielding double plays (36), was second in runs scored (58), total bases and hits, third batting average (.408), tied for third in home runs (7), fourth in slugging (.626) and assists (124).
Benedict made the All-CAC second team in his first full year as a starter at shortstop. He is batting .366 (11th in the CAC) with a .415 on base percentage and 50 runs scored (tied for fourth) as the Wolverines' lead off man. His 68 hits were third in the conference. Benedict tied Wesley's season record for triples with five and has nine doubles, a homer and 40 runs batted in to go along with 20 stolen bases (second in the CAC). Defensively, he led the conference in assists with 153 and ranked second to Murphy in fielding double plays with 33.
Keckler, who was named the CAC Rookie of the Year as a freshman, pitched in 17 games in 2010, including 11 starts. He pitched the team's only complete game shutout of the year and posted a 5-5 record. His 55 strikeouts paced the Wolverines (tied for third in the CAC), including a season-high eight against Neumann in the ECAC Championship game. Keckler tossed 78.2 innings, tops on the team and second in the conference.
The trio helped Wesley to a 29-13 record, an appearance in the championship of the CAC Playoffs and the ECAC South Championship.
