DOVER, Del. - Wesley College's Steve Perone (Skillman, N.J./Montogomery) hit a three-run homer and the duo of Jordan Lozzi (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) and Zach Stuart (Palmyra, Pa/Palmyra Area) kept the York (Pa.) offense in check as the Wolverines eliminated the Spartans from the CAC Playoffs.
After the second round, five teams remain in the CAC Playoffs, all of who head to top seeded Salisbury for the remainder of the tournament. Wesley will face Mary Washington in an elimination game at 12:30 on Saturday, April 16. The winner of that game will play on Sunday, April 17 at noon with an opponent to be determined by the number of remaining teams for Sunday's action.
Lozzi and York's (9-20) Andy Rosenzweig were locked in a pitchers dual through four innings. In Wesley's (17-17) half of the fifth, Perone singled to lead off and moved to third on a double by Ryan Polk (Croydon, Pa./Truman). The Wolverines went ahead 1-0 on a fielder's choice by the next batter Corey Jefferson (Wilmington, Del./Archmere).
Rosenzweig got out of that inning without further damage, but the Wesley offense was back in action in the sixth. Kevin Murphy (Middletown, Md./Middletown) reached on an error and Geoff Kimmel (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) stroked a one out single. With two outs, Perone took a 1-1 pitch and put it over the right field wall for a 4-0 Wolverine lead.
The Spartans answered back in the top of the seventh. York cut the lead in half on Justin Cohen's two-run blast to right, scoring Steve Tretter, who had doubled earlier in the inning. Rob Kinck and CT Stanley followed with singles and a two-out single by Colin Porter put the Spartans within a run 4-3.
Jefferson led off the bottom of the inning with a double to right center and was bunted over to third by Greg McKee (Dover, Del./Caesar Rodney). Rob Benedict (Drexel Hill, Pa./Monsignor Bonner) singled off the glove of a diving Klinck at shortstop on a drawn in infield, scoring Jefferson for a 5-3 lead.
Lozzi ran into trouble in the top of the eighth when Kyle Cook walked and Devin Harbold singled to start the inning. The Wolverines turned to Stuart and Tretter sacrificed the runners into scoring position for the first out. Stuart then forced Cohen to pop out on the first pitch and struck out Klinck looking to end the threat.
The freshman then tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to close out the game.
Perone finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Jon Carlson (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) and Ryan Polk (Croydon, Pa./Truman) also had two hits for the Wolverines.
Porter was the only Spartan with two hits, while Cook added a hit and drew the only walk of the game for either team.
Lozzi tossed seven strong innings for his sixth win of 2011. He fanned eight and walked just one, allowing three runs on eight hits. Stuart went two hitless innings to close the game for his fourth save.
Rosenzweig allowed five runs to take the loss, but only two runs were earned. He struck out three and did not issue a walk in 7.1 innings. Brandon Ullom struck out four of the five batters he faced in relief.
