Matthews Named ACFC Player of the Week
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Wesley College senior middle linebacker Sean Matthews was named the Atlantic Central Football Conference Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in a 23-12 win over Iona.
Matthews, a Pennsauken, New Jersey native, led a stifling Wesley defense in a 23-12 win over Iona, the first win over a Division I FCS team in program history. He had nine tackles, seven came against the run with only two of those allowing more than three yards. He spearheaded a defense that held Iona to its lowest total offensive output since week one.
Teammates Shane McSweeny (offense) and Larry Beavers (special teams) were named to the ACFC Honor Roll.
It is the second straight week a Wolverine earned the distinction after defensive end Gabe Tranchetti won the award after Wesley's 38-6 win over Frostburg State.
Wesley, ranked 11th in the latest D3football.com Top 25, enters its Homecoming contest against the Apprentice with a record of 3-1 and 1-0 in conference play. Kickoff is set for 1:15 PM on Saturday, October 18.
