Wesley picked to win ACFC

NEWPORTS NEWS, Va. - Three-time defending champion Wesley College was the preseason selection to win the 2008 Atlantic Central Football Conference title in the poll of ACFC coaches and sports information directors announced today.

The Wolverines garnered five first-place votes in the selection, while the other three went to Salisbury University.  Both teams have been receiving votes in national preseason polls as the Wolverines have been as high as third  and in the top six in all polls, while the Seagulls have been in the top 15 in all polls.

"The preseason polls are great for the kids to see and to know people respect you but they are based on last year," said Wesley coach Mike Drass. "We are excited about getting started with this season."

"There is no surprise to see Wesley ranked No. 1 in the preseason ACFC poll," said SU coach Sherman Wood on Friday during the ACFC preseason press conference. "I was pleased to hear Salisbury received some first-place votes in the preseason poll."

Following those two were the Apprentice School with 14 points and Frostburg State University with 18 points.

The 2008 season will open on September 6 with Wesley College at Christopher Newport University, Salisbury University at Albright  and Malone College at Apprentice School.
