Beavers' Returns Power Shutout Win
DOVER, Del. - Larry Beavers ran back both a kick and a punt for touchdowns as No. 11 Wesley College shutout Apprentice 48-0 on Homecoming.
Wesley also benefitted from a stifling defense that limited the Builders to zero rushing yards. Additionally, the Wolverines held Apprentice quarterback Phil Caralla to just 18-of-43 for 125 yards and intercepted him twice.
Jon Lanouette's (Wilmington, Del./Newark) numbers on the afternoon - three receptions for 28 yards - were not huge, but the senior became the all-time leading receiver in Wesley history with 133 receptions.
Beavers (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) took the opening and ran it back untouched 79 yards as the Wolverines (4-1, 2-0 ACFC) took a 6-0 lead just 12 seconds into the contest. Then in the second half his 43-yard punt return made it 34-0 with 10:51 to go in the third quarter.
His game opening return propelled Wesley to a 20-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The first of Mike Pennewell's (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) three scores on the afternoon on an eight-yard run completed a 12-play drive to make it 13-0.
Linebacker Eddie Donisi (Woodbury, N.J./West Deptford) scored for the second game in a row when he returned an interception 25 yards for the final score of the period. The senior scored a defensive point after touchdown in last week's win at Iona.
After a scoreless second quarter, the Wolverines erupted for 21 third quarter points. Apprentice was forced to punt and Wesley took over at the Builders' 44. On the second play of the drive, Pennewell ran 20 yards and then busted off a 24-yard touchdown run for a 27-0 lead.
Later in the period, a 25-yard run by Abeeb Badmus (Sharon Hill, Pa./Interboro) and a 46-yard pass from Shane McSweeny (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) to Beavers set up a Pennewell's final score from five yards out.
Wesley capped the scoring on the fourth play of the fourth quarter when Jason Schatz (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) hit tight end Sean McAndrew (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) for a 48-yard touchdown with 13:16 left in the game.
Pennewell rushed for 89 yards on just 10 carries. He now has five touchdowns in the past two games after scoring twice last week.
Beavers racked up 221 all purpose yards, more than the total for the entire Apprentice team who had 211.
Wesley topped 200 rushing yards for the fifth straight game, piling up 214 yards on 41 carries.
Sean Matthews (Pennsauken, N.J./Roman Catholic (Pa.)) had nine tackles to lead the Wolverines, while Jeffrey Dorsey had 1.5 sacks. Aaron Benson had an interception and a fumble recovery.
Jeremy Drayton and Andre Sanders had eight stops apiece to lead the Builders defense.
The Wolverines hit the road next weekend for a contest at NAIA foe Webber International.
