Beavers, Benson Win Weekly Awards
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Wesley College senior Larry Beavers was named the ACFC Special Teams Player of the Week, while sophomore Aaron Benson won the same award on defense.
Beavers (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown in the Wolverines 48-0 win over Apprentice on Homecoming. The senior was was not finished, diving over two defenders and the pylon for another score on a 43-yard punt return. He averaged 44.5 yards per punt return and racked up 221 all-purpose yards - more than the Builders' team total of 211.
Benson (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) made six tackles, recovered a fumble, broke up a pass and intercepted another in the game. He spearheaded a defense that limited the Builders to zero yards on 26 rushes and just 125 total yards in the game.
It was the second player of the week award for Beavers, who was also named the Offensive Player of the Week on September 22. Benson made it back-to-back weeks for a Wesley player to win Defensive Player of the Week honors after Sean Matthews won the award last week.
Wesley, 4-1 overall, will travel south to warmer climates with a game against Webber International in Babson Park, Florida on October 25 at 1:00 PM.
