Beavers, Newman Fuel Wesley Win

LAKE WALES, Fla. - Larry Beavers scored three touchdowns - all of at least 40 yards - and Blair Newman scored twice as No. 11 Wesley picked up another road win with a 42-13 win over NAIA Webber International.

The Wesley (5-1) offense scored touchdowns on each of its first six possessions, including twice in the first half without running an offensive play, to dominate the Warriors (1-7) on their home field.

Beavers scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass on the first Wolverine possession when quarterback Shane McSweeny hit him for the first of his three touchdown passes on the afternoon to cap a seven play, 68 yard drive and give the Wolverines a 7-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

McSweeny finished a 12-play, 80-yard drive early in the second quarter with a five-yard pass to Blair Newman who dove to the pylon to extend the lead to 14-0.

After Mike Pennewell scored untouched on a two-yard run on the third Wesley possession, McSweeny and Newman hooked up for another five-yard score with just 26 seconds left in the first half as the Wolverines went into the break ahead 28-0.

The second half opened with Beavers doing what he does best.  He brought back the opening kick of the half 80 yards for a score.  Then after the Warriors cut it to 35-7, Beavers ran back the next kick 90 yards for a 42-7 lead with 11:23 to play in the half.

Webber International added a late score on a touchdown run by Rupert Webley, but Wesley blocked the extra point for the 42-13 final.

Wesley was held to a season-low 169 yards rushing on the afternoon.  Mike Pennewell carried 13 times for 70 yards and a score, while Barry Garrard had 62 yards on eight runs.

McSweeny and the passing game did most of its damage in the first half.  The sophomore finished 16-of-23 for 212 yards, three touchdowns and an interception.

Playing in place of Jon Lanouette, Sean McAndrew had a career day catching seven passes for 104 yards.  He entered the game with just eight catches and 108 yards in his career.

The Wesley defense was led by seven players with four tackles apiece.  Aaron Benson had four tackles and an interception.  Sean Matthews had a sack to go along with his four stops, while Marcus Wilson had half a sack among his.

The Wolverines will have a shorter road trip next weekend as they head down the penninsula to renew the Route 13 Rivalry with No. 15 Salisbury.  Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM at Sea Gull Stadium.
