AP Tabs Beavers Little All-American
DOVER, Del. - Wesley College's Larry Beavers picked up his second All-American honor of the offseason, earning a place on the prestigious Associated Press Little All-American team as an all-purpose player.
The Little All-America Team includes players from NCAA Divisions II and III and the NAIA.
Beavers' (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) selection marks the third consecutive year a Wolverine has earned a place on the squad and the fifth time in the last six seasons.
Earlier in the week, Beavers was named to the American Football Coaches Association Division III All-America First Team. It adds another honor to go along with his second consecutive ACFC Special Teams Player of the Year honor and a spot on the D3football.com All-South Region First Team after a run through the record books in 2008. The speedster now holds the NCAA Division III career marks for kick return touchdowns 10 and total runbacks for touchdowns 13.
He was one of two Atlantic Central Football Conference players honored. Jarrell Chandler of Route 13 rival Salisbury was named to the second team as well.
This year, Beavers returned a kick and a punt for touchdowns against the Apprentice School, consecutive kickoffs at Webber International, and a punt at Lake Erie College. His 98-yard kickoff return against Mary Hardin-Baylor set a school record for longest return and established the new Division III record with as his fifth kickoff return score of the year. He led Division III in kick return average at 39.5 and averaged over 29 yards per punt return.
Beavers also started at receiver for the Wolverines, leading the team with 598 yards and tying for the team lead with 30 receptions and six touchdowns.
Beavers ended his career with 2,366 receiving yards, second all-time at Wesley. He finished his career seventh all-time with 126 career receptions.
With 41 career touchdowns between receiving, kick and punt returns, Beavers is the all-time leader in ACFC history in touchdowns scored. His 5,373 all-purpose yards are also a conference record.
Beavers follows the 2007 selection of Bryan Robinson and the Wolverines' two selections in 2006, Mario Harris and Michael Clarke. Rocky Myers was a two-time selection in 2003 and 2004. Brandon Steinheim (1996) and Kevin Fowlkes (1990) were Wesley's first two selections in program history.
