Duo Wins ACFC Player of the Week

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -Wesley College quarterback Shane McSweeny (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) and defensive end Chris Mayes (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) each won awards after their performances in a 44-19 win over Frostburg State.

McSweeny was named the Offensive Player of the Week after he tied both conference and school records with six touchdown passes in the win.  Five of the scores were of at least 20 yards, helping the junior to 366 yards through the air.  It was the first 300-yard passing day for a Wolverine since the 2006 playoffs.  McSweeny completed 18-of-31 passes and added 31 rushing yards for good measure.

Mayes was a co-winner of the Defensive Player of the Week award after spending much of Saturday in the Bobcats' backfield.  The sophomore made 3.5 tackles for losses covering 21 yards, including 1.5 sacks.  Mayes also batted down a pass and finished second on the team with seven tackles.  He was a key part of rush defense that limited Frostburg State to just 43 yards on 34 attempts.

The win came on Wesley's Homecoming Weekend and was its ACFC opener for 2009.

The fifth-ranked Wolverines are idle this week before traveling to Apprentice on October 17.
