Kapepula Named ECAC Defensive Rookie of the Year

CENTERVILLE, Mass. – Sosthene Kapepula was named the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division III Defensive Rookie of the Year.  Also earning first team recognition were quarterback Shane McSweeny, offensive tackle James Buettner, linebacker Jeff Morgan and defensive back Dakevis Howard.

A native of Olney, Md., Kapepula was a force in his first year for the Wolverines, finishing fourth on the team in tackles with 65. Ending up with 6.5 tackles for a loss, 3.5 sacks, two picks and one forced fumble, the freshman was a key ingredient to Wesley's run to the Division III national semifinals. Kapepula was a piece of a defense that allowed 284.6 yards and 15.9 points per game.

The South Region player of the Year, McSweeny passed for 3,019 yards with 33 touchdowns while completing 64.5 percent of his passes.  He also rushed for 774 yards and a team-high 13 scores.

McSweeny will leave a heavy mark on the Wolverines record books as he ranks second at Wesley with 7,939 passing yards and 87 passing touchdowns.  He is also third with 522 completions and 840 attempts. Also a threat with his legs, McSweeny ranks eighth in school history with 1,779 rushing yards and fifth with 24 rushing touchdowns.

Buettner anchored an offensive line which helped the Wolverines average 414.2 yards of offense per game and nearly 40 points a contest. One of the most dominant tackles in all of Division III, Buettner has started every game the last three seasons and saw some spot starts as a freshman.

Morgan closed out his college career leading the team with 110 tackles and tying Mayes with 20.5 tackles for loss.  His seven sacks were second on the squad and he also broke up four passes to finish fifth on the Wolverines.  The Vineland, N.J., native recorded a season-high 14 tackles in a NCAA Quarterfinal win at Mary Hardin-Baylor and tallied a pair of sacks with four tackles for loss at the Apprentice School. Morgan leaves Wesley ranked fourth in school history with 54.5 tackles for loss and fifth with 30.5 sacks in his career.

The leader of the Wolverines' secondary, Howard led Wesley with 14 pass breakups and finished second on the squad with four interceptions.  The native of Wilmington, Del., also tallied 47 tackles with 2.5 of them coming for loss.

Wesley College's football team finished the 2011 season at 12-2 and went to its fifth NCAA Division III Semifinal in the last seven years. The Wolverines also took home their third straight Lambert Meadowlands Trophy which goes to the top small college football team in the East.
