Wesley Wins in Double Overtime
DOVER, Del. - Wesley College's Brooke Tadlock (Middletown, Del./Middletown) scored on a breakaway in the 95th minute of play to lift the Wolverines to a 3-2 win over Mary Washington in CAC field hockey action.
The win kept Wesley unbeaten in 2009 at 7-0 (2-0 CAC), the best start in school history. Mary Washington (5-2, 2-1 CAC) had its five-match win streak snapped.
The Eagles led 2-0 in the game. A goal by Florence George with just 32 seconds left in the half gave Mary Washington a 1-0 advantage at the intermission. George then assisted on the second goal, by Emma Jones at 36:53. Jackie Tait also assisted on the goal to give the Eagles two goal cushion.
Wesley scored its first goal just three minutes later. Tadlock took a shot on cage deflected by Eagle keeper Chrissy Bowdren. Erin Bailey (Rehoboth Beach, Del./Cape Henlopen) was waiting on the opposite side of the cage to knock in her first goal of the game.
It was Bailey again who tied the game at 63:18 with an assist from Nicole Hill (Pocomoke, Md./Holly Grove). Both teams had chances down the stretch, but to no avail as the contest went into overtime and then a second extra period.
In the second overtime, Tadlock got the ball and came down the left side, shooting across into the right center of the goal for the game-winner.
Both goalkeepers were tested in the game. Bowdren made 20 saves, while Wesley's Sarah Johnson (Honeybrook, Pa./Twin Valley) had 11.
The Wolverines attempted 26 corners in the game, compared to 13 for the Eagles.
Wesley is back in action on September 27 at Lynchburg College.
