Wesley Earns First Victory Of Season
New Wilmington, Pa. - Playing in their second game of the Buzz Ridl Classic hosted by Westminster (0-4) College, the Wolverines (1-2) uncovered their first victory of the season by beating their hosts 101-85 on the final day of the tournament. Wesley's Rashawn Johnson (Selbyville, Del.) continued to have the hot hand for the Wolverines scoring a team high 24 points in the victory.
After the tournament, Rashawn Johnson and Alphonzo Wright were named to the All-Tournament team.
Evan Martin hit 6-of-8 threes in the game to lead a Wesley team that hit 18-of-40 (45 percent) from beyond the arc in the contest. Martin finished with 22 points on 7-of-12 shooting with six rebounds.
Wright posted a double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and six assists in the win.
All five Wesley starters finished in double figures and Rudy Thomas (Milton, Del.), Rashawn Johnson, Martin and Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del.) all hit at least three threes.
Wesley earned the victory by finding the touch from behind the arc. In the first half alone, Wesley took 22 shots from three point territory. While the Wolverines drained nine from long distance, Westminster's own Ryne Murray scored 17 in the opening 20 minutes to keep the Titans down by just two at the half.
Wesley's Martin led the way nailing 3-of-4 threes in the half. Teammates Kevin Johnson and Thomas had two each in the half.
After scoring eight points in the first half, Rashawn Johnson used a 16-point second half to lead the Wolverines to victory. Johnson shot nearly 55 percent from the floor in the stanza, including 3-of-6 from behind the arc. In addition to Johnson, Martin continued to shoot the lights out adding 3-of-4 three pointers in a 13 point second half effort.
While Wesley was dialing long distance all afternoon, Westminster connected on just 5-of-17 from behind the arc.
Wesley travels next week to their second tournament of the young 2008-09 season matching up with Otterbein College at the Christopher Newport Invitational in Newport News, Va. on Friday, November 28th at 5:00 p.m.
