Wesley Sunk by Shoremen
CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Wesley College and Washington College combined for 46 fouls in the annual rivalry game played won by the Shoremen, 93-89.
Both team's top forwards posted double-doubles but spent the final seconds on the bench after fouling out and six other players tallied four fouls apiece in the game.
Wesley's (3-4) Alphonzo Wright (Dover, Del./Polytech) turned in his fifth consecutive double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds, including seven on the offensive end. But with the Wolverines trailing with 21 seconds to play, the junior was forced to commit his fifth foul in an effort to keep his team in the game.
It came just four seconds after Washington's (4-3) Alan Kines fouled the Wolverines' Evan Martin (Wilmington, Del./Laurinburg {N.C.}), who made the free throw to complete a three-point play to pull Wesley within four at 90-86. Kines finished with 18 points and 10 rebounds in the win.
After Wright fouled out on the next possession, Tim Kohlrus, who led all players with 19 points, made just one of his two free throws for a 91-86 lead. Wright's replacement Rudy Thomas (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) drilled a three for his only points of the game to cut it to a two-point game with 12 seconds to play.
Wesley could not steal the inbounds, however, and were forced to foul. Kevin Breslin sank a pair of foul shots to ice the game.
Martin and James Stratton (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) scored 18 apiece to lead Wesley. Rashawn Johnson (Selbyville, Del./Sussex Tech) overcame a poor shooting night to score 14 points and Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) pitched in with 11.
Playing in just his second game with the team after the completion of football season, Sean McAndrew (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) came off the bench to score 10 points and give the Wolverines six players in double figures.
Unlike the first half that featured just one lead change with 9:55 left, the second half featured 14 lead changes and a pair of ties.
The final of those 14 lead changes came when Breslin converted a three-point play with 3:45 to go that gave the Shoremen an 80-77 lead.
In addition to Kohlrus and Hines, three other Washington players reached double digits. Andrew Chambers scored 13 points, Chris Olsen added a dozen and Breslin netted 11 off the bench.
Wesley will look to get back in the win column on Friday, December 19 when The College of New Jersey visits Wentworth Gymnasium.
