Wolverines Outlast Stevenson, 92-88

Box Score

STEVENSON, Md. - Wesley College got 33 points from the Capital Athletic Conference's (CAC) top scorer Rashawn Johnson (Selbyville, Del./Sussex Tech), but it was a pair of performances off the bench helped the Wolverines to a 92-88 win over Stevenson in conference action.

Reserve Jacques Bowe (Millsboro, N.J./Sussex Tech) scored a career-high 10 points and Sean McAndrew (Lanoka Harbor, N.J./Lacey Township) hauled in a dozen rebounds to lead Wesley (5-5, 2-0 CAC), despite combining to play just 28 minutes.

It was a tale of two halves for both teams.  After scoring a combined 63 points in the first half, Wesley scored that many alone as the school's tallied 117 total points in the final 20 minutes.

The Wolverines trailed 34-29 at the half after shooting just 27 percent from the floor, but rebounded to hit 8-of-17 threes in the second half to come from behind.

Down by six, 40-34 , after a pair of Chaise Lancaster free throws, Rudy Thomas' (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) only field goal of the game sparked a 15-4 run that put the Wolverines ahead 49-44 with 14:40 to go.

The lead was sliced to just a single point, 85-84, after a Matt Leddy three with 51 seconds remaining.  Wesley answered back almost immediately with a three by Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) eight seconds later.

Stevenson's (2-10, 1-2 CAC) Greg Woody cut it to two points, 89-87, with 16 seconds left, but Johnson drained both free throws for a four point advantage.

Woody was fouled with 11 seconds on the clock, but made just one of two.  Wesley gained possession and James Stratton (Magnolia, Del./Caesar Rodney) sealed the game with a foul shot of his own.

Rashawn Johnson hit five threes in the game and all five of his rebounds came on the offensive glass.  In fact, 23 of Wesley's 45 boards came on the offensive end, including half of McAndrew's team high.

Bowe hit 4-of-5 field goals, including a pair of threes, in just 11 minutes off the bench.  Evan Martin (Wilmington, Del./Laurinburg Institute {N.C.}) scored 11 points.

The Mustangs received big games from Woody and forward Kerry Dugan.  Woody scored 26 points and added seven rebounds, while Dugan turned in a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds.  Keith Holtman, meanwhile, hit all eight of his field goals for 17 points.  Lancaster, 14 points, and Leddy, 11, gave Stevenson five players in double figures.

The Wolverines will look for their third straight win when Marymount (Va.) (5-5, 1-1 CAC) visits Wentworth Gymnasium for a 4:00 PM tip off in CAC action.
