Win Streak Snapped at Marymount

ARLINGTON, Va. - Wesley College's 11 game win streak came to a halt as the Wolverines came up on the short end of an 88-74 final on the road in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The loss was the Wolverines (14-6, 10-1 CAC) first in the conference and leaves them a half game ahead of St. Mary's atop the CAC standings.

Rashawn Johnson (Selbyville, Del./Sussex Tech) scored 24 points for Wesley and Evan Martin (Wilmington, Del./Laurinburg {N.C.} Institute) added 23, but only one other player had more than five for the Wolverines on an off shooting night that saw the team hit just 39 percent from the floor.

Tarek Ammoury and Mike Gray each had double-doubles for the Saints (9-10, 5-6 CAC).  The duo combined for 25 rebounds in the game, while Wesley collected just 26 as a team.  Ammoury poured in game-highs with 28 points and 13 rebounds.  Gray had 19 points and a dozen boards.

Wesley jumped ahead 6-0 in the first 37 seconds of the game behind threes from Johnson and Martin and still led 9-8 after another Johnson three after just 2:12 of play.  Ammoury, however, scored four straight points give the Saints the lead and start what would turn out to be a 19-3 run.  Marymount eventually built the lead to as many as 17 in the opening half before settling for a 46-35 lead at the half.

A lay up by Alphonzo Wright (Dover, Del./Polytech) and three by Martin quickly cut it to six points, 46-40, but Ammoury and Gray combined for six straight points as the lead swelled back to a dozen with 16:31 left in the game. 

Wesley eventually got back to within seven, 52-45, on a Rudy Thomas (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) lay up with 15:54 remaining, but Marymount hit eight straight free throws in a 12-0 run that put the game out of reach.

Martin hit 4-of-9 threes and added five rebounds and five assists.  Johnson sank five threes in the contest.

Patrick Prewitt, 12 points, and Elvis Ellis, 11, joined Ammoury and Gray in double figures for the Saints.

Wesley was outrebounded in the game 49-26, but somehow managed to hold a 17-10 advantage in second chance points.

Marymount hit 21-of-26 from the line (80 percent) as a team in the game.

Wesley will look to regroup when the Wolverines head south on Route 13 to face rival Salisbury on Saturday, February 4 at 4:00 PM.
