Wesley Falls at Hood
FREDERICK, Md. - Wesley College received a career-high 26 points from Evan Martin (Wilmington, Del./Laurinburg {N.C.} Institute), but a three by Garrett Williams with six seconds to play gave Hood College the upset in Capital Athletic Conference action, 86-83.
Martin combined with Rashawn Johnson (Selbyville, Del./Sussex Tech) for 48 points, but the Wolverines (15-7, 11-2 CAC) got just two points out of their bench and hit just 1-of-16 threes in the second half as the Blazers (8-15, 5-9 CAC) picked up their second win over team in the top three in the conference standings in less than two weeks.
Wesley led by 11 in the first half after Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) fed Martin for a three that made it 34-23 with 8:56 to go. Rashawn Johnson was fouled shooting a three and made all three foul shots as the Wolverines still led by nine, 44-35, with 4:42 to play in the half.
A lay up by Tyler Snoots with 35 seconds left in the half capped a 12-3 run to send the teams into the locker room knotted up at 47-47.
In the second half, a three-point play by Rashawn Johnson capped a 14-4 run that built a 74-62 lead with 7:32 remaining, but just as in the first half, Hood battled back. On the Blazers' next possession, J'Air Brady started a 12-2 run that cut the Wolverines' lead to just two in less than two minutes.
Wesley still clung to slim lead until Williams hit a three with 2:58 left for an 81-80 Hood lead. A free throw by Rashawn Johnson tied it with 26 seconds to go at 83-83, but Brady stole the ball with 12 seconds left and Tim Abercrombie hit Williams for the game-winner with just six seconds to play.
Martin added six rebounds and three assists to his career-high scoring total. Rashawn Johnson tallied 22 points, grabbed eight boards and had four steals. Alphonzo Wright (Dover, Del./Polytech) had a double-double, his 11th of the year, with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Kevin Johnson added six assists.
Brady hit 8-of-12 field goals to lead Hood with 18 points. Snoots came off the bench for 14 points and eight boards. Brenden Straughn rang up 13 points and Abercrombie added 10. Jeff Willison grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds and came up one point shy of the double-double.
The loss dropped Wesley a half game behind St. Mary's (Md.) in the CAC standings.
Wesley will look to rebound when York (Pa.) comes to Wentworth Gymnasium on Saturday, February 14 for a 4:00 PM tip off.
