Johnson Tops 2,000 Point Mark in Win
DOVER, Del. - Wesley College's Rashawn Johnson (Selbyville, Del./Sussex Tech) became the first Wolverine in school history to top the 2,000 career point mark in a 65-57 win over visiting Marymount (Va.) in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action.
The historic point came on a free throw with 9:44 to play as he scored 14 of his 21 in the second half to erase a cold shooting first half in which Wesley (6-5, 3-0 CAC) hit just 26 percent of its field goals.
Marymount (5-6, 1-2 CAC) held the Wolverines to just two points over a six minute span in the first half, scoring 11 points themselves to a 23-16 lead with 3:03 to play and carried a 29-24 lead into the half. The Saints held Wesley to just 3-of-23 from three point range in the half.
Wesley trailed through the early second half until Johnson hit a three with 12:27 to play. There were six lead changes and six ties over the next eight minutes before Alphonzo Wright (Dover, Del./Polytech) made a lay up with 4:01 left to put the Wolverines ahead 54-52.
Evan Martin (Wilmington, Del./Laurinburg Institute {N.C.}) matched Johnson with a game-high 21 points and also dished out six assists. Wright scored 10 points and had a game-high nine rebounds.
Despite not using a player taller than 6-3 against a Marymount (Va.) front court that featured two players at 6-5, another at 6-7 and a fourth at 6-10, Wesley was only rebounded by two, 38-36.
While Wesley was held under 70 points for the first time all season, its defense put up its best effort of the year, limiting the Saints to only 57 points and forced 29 turnovers.
Mike Gray led Marymount with 15 points and Sam Sentz added 10.
Neither team had much luck from beyond the arc. The Wolverines hit just 6-of-36, but the Saints were 0-of-10.
Wesley will look for its fourth straight win on Wednesday, when Salisbury visits Wentworth Gymnasium for an 8:00 PM tip off.
