First Half Run Fuels Wesley Win
BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Wesley College men's basketball team closed the first half with a 20-5 run as the Wolverines defeated Bridgewater 78-66 at the Don Glick/BC Classic.
A lay up by Paul Reynolds (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) gave Wesley a 22-16 advantage with just over six minutes left in the first half, but a pair of lay ups by Segar Jordan and two free throws by Dominic Trawick knotted the score with five minutes left.
Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) scored five straight points and had seven of his team-high 20 points during the run as the Wolverines pulled away for a 42-27 halftime lead.
The Eagles (1-1) fought back in the second half, however, and trailed by just six on two occasions - a three by Trawick with 4:25 to play and a jumper by Jake Johnson that made it 65-59 with 3:47 left.
A lay in by David Langan (Sayreville, N.J./Sayreville War Memorial) stretched it back to eight and a bucket by Rudy Thomas (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Tech) stretched it back to 10, 69-59 with 3:07 left and ended the Bridgewater threat. Wesley then hit 9-of-11 free throws down the stretch to ice the game.
Kevin Johnson hit 6-of-12 field goals and 7-of-9 from the line in the contest. Langan and Alphonzo Wright (Dover, Del./Polytech) added 10 each. Langan also hauled in 11 rebounds for his first career double-double.
On the evening, Wesley hit 17-of-22 free throws and held a 50-32 advantage on the glass.
Trawick had a monster game in the losing effort, tallying 30 points on 11-of-25 shooting and had six rebounds and three steals, as well. Jake Johnson added a dozen points and Rick Maloney had nine boards.
The Wolverines take on Eastern Mennonite in on the tournament's second day, November 22 at 2:00 PM.
