Wesley Extends Home Win Streak
DOVER, Del. - Wesley College outlasted Marymount (Va.) 70-65 for its 13th straight home win in a game in which the two teams combined for 57 fouls and 70 free throws.
The Saints (3-4, 1-2 CAC) took a commanding 19-7 lead early after free throw by Tarek Ammoury with 13:18 left in the first half. Two threes by Jacques Bowe (Millsboro, Del./Sussex Tech) and one by Jermaine Carter (Richmond, Va./Thomas Jefferson) fueled a 14-2 Wolverine (4-3, 1-1 CAC) run that tied the game at 21-21 on a Carl Hinton (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Central) foul shot less than five minutes later.
Marymount's Austin Giffin scored the next four points, his only scoring on the day, as the Saints built the lead back to eight after an Elvis Ellis bucket with 4:30 left in the half making it 32-24.
A three by Rudy Thomas (Milton, Del./Sussex Tech) cut it to five and the Wolverines whittled the lead down and went into the locker room with a two-point lead, 35-33, after Kevin Johnson (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) nailed another triple with 39 seconds to go.
Like in the first half, the Saints opened the second half with a run and led by eight, 43-35, with 16:52 to play after a Ronnie Barbour three. Chris Douglas (Landover, Md./Jericho Prep Academy) found the bottom of the net inside the paint on the Wolverines' next possession to start a 13-2 run that resulted in a 48-45 Wesley lead with 11:36 left in the gam.
The Wolverines never trailed again and led by as many as 10 after a free throw by Thomas gave Wesley a 66-56 lead with under three minutes to play.
Neither team was able to take advantage of all the free throws. Wesley hit just 24-of-45 (53 percent), while the Saints went 20-of-35 (57 percent).
Two reserves had big games for the Wolverines. Hinton came off the bench for his first career double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Bowe added 13 points and five boards on 3-of-9 from long range and 4-of-4 from the line.
Johnson led the team with 17 points and four assists. Thomas chipped in with 16 points.
Three Marymount players scored in double figures, but unfortunately all three fouled out as well. Sam Sentz paced Marymount with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting and eight rebounds . Barbour also scored 16 points and Tarek Ammoury added 12 points despite going 1-of-11 from the floor and committing eight turnovers. He hit 10-of-12 free throws.
Wesley avoided any players fouling out, but every player the Wolverines used was whistled for at least one foul.
The Wesley men are idle for finals this week before heading to York (Pa.) for a December 14 game at 8:00 PM following a women's game at 6:00 PM.
