Men’s Hoops Drops Overtime Heartbreaker At Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - Despite 18 second-half points by Paul Reynolds, Wesley College's men's basketball team fell in overtime to Hood College, 74-67, Saturday afternoon in Capital Athletic Conference action at BB&T Arena.

Reynolds finished with 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting to lead Wesley (7-11, 5-4 CAC) on the day.  Chris Douglas was the only other Wolverine to score in double figures as nine of his 13 points also came in the second period.

A native of Smyrna, Del., Reynolds owned the second-half of play as he nearly single-handedly kept Wesley in the game.  The Wolverines did not regain the lead until midway through the second stanza when Rasheed Carter (eight points) nailed a pair of free throws to put Wesley on top, 46-45 with 11:24 in regulation.

With Reynolds showing the way, the Wolverines extended the advantage to as many as five three times, with the last coming at 57-52 with 6:08 left after a layup by Douglas.

Hood (11-6, 3-5 CAC) started to double up on Reynolds and rallied to take a 62-61 lead with just 2:39 remaining. Wesley looked for the answer inside with Reynolds, but with him tightly covered, Douglas drained a three-ball to put the Wolverines back on top 64-62 at the 1:47 mark.

The Blazers tied the game on the ensuing possession and the teams went into the extra period tied at 64.  Hood scored the first six points of overtime and that would be all the Blazers would need as they outscored the Wolverines 10-3 in overtime.

Early on, the Wolverines took an early 10-2 lead at the 14:11 mark of the first half after a three-pointer by Reynolds. The eight-point lead was the largest advantage held by either team as Wesley looked to run away early by going inside to David Langan (four points) and Reynolds.

Foul trouble then started to take its toll on the Wolverines as Langan and Reynolds, who scored all of Wesley's first ten points, picked up two quick fouls each.

Hood tied the game at 14 and 16, but Wesley, behind a deep bench got the lead up to as high as 29-22 after a trey by Devon Davidson (three points) with just under three minutes remaining. That lead was quickly erased as the Blazers closed the first period on a 9-1 run to take a 31-30 lead at the break.

With a hot-shooting second and overtime session, Hood outshot Wesley, 50.0% to 42.6%.  After shooting just 42% from the floor in the first half, Hood made over 57% of their shots the remainder of the game, including 4-of-5 in OT.

Wesley returns to action Saturday, February 28 when it travels down Route 13 to take on CAC rival Salisbury in a 4 pm start.
