Wolverines Shutout Villa Julie

DOVER, Del. - Despite playing a mand down for the final 75:46, Wesley picked up a 2-0 shutout win over Villa Julie in the Capital Athletic Conference finale for both squads.

The Wolverines (6-10, 5-3 CAC) got the game winner on a corner by Peter Hulem at 11:05 off a corner kick.

Wesley was penalized with red card less than three minutes later, but the Wolverine defense did not break.   For the game, Wesley allowed just two shots on goal.

The Wolverines got their second goal of the contest just before the half.  After a shot by Mike Thomas was saved but not secured by Villa Julie (7-8-1, 5-3 CAC) goalkeeper Eric Lowman, John Burke cleaned up the mess in front of goal, punching it in for a 2-0 advantage.

The Wesley defense held the Mustangs in check for the entire second half, but with just two seconds remaining Sal Caltabiano was awarded a penalty kick.  Wolverine keeper Nick Talarico was up to the task, however, preserving shutout victory with his second save of the afternoon.

Lowman made eight saves for the Mustangs.

The game was a very physical contest on both sides, with the teams combining for seven cards and 31 fouls.

The contest also had heavy postseason implications.  Both squads entered the day with matching 4-3 records in CAC play.  Wesley is now 5-3, but due to head-to-head tiebreakers, will finish fourth in the CAC regular season, regardless of the remaining games for other institutions.

The Wolverines conclude the regular season with a non-conference match at Neumann on Wednesday, October 24.
