Wolverines Fall in Conference Semifinals
SALISBURY, Md. - Wesley trailed just 1-0 through the first 70 minutes, but top-seeded Salisbury scored three late goals to take a 4-0 win over the Wolverines in the Capital Athletic Conference semifinals.
Mike Napolitano scored twice for Salisbury (14-4-1), who advances to the CAC Championship game against York (Pa.). The Spartans defeated Villa Julie 8-0 in the other semifinal.
Napolitano scored the game's first two goals including the game winner in the 24th minute. That score was the lone goal of the first half as fourth-seeded Wesley (7-11-1) kept the game close.
Still down just 1-0, 20 minutes into the second half, the Wolverines were awarded a penalty kick, which would have given Wesley a chance to tie. After a discussion, the officials changed their ruling and the Wolverines were not given the penalty kick.
Napolitano's second goal of the game came minutes later at 70:24 and the Sea Gulls added two more before the end of regulation.
"It was unfortunate," said Wesley Coach Steve Clark. "We almost had a penalty kick that would have given us a good chance to tie the score. After the officials talked, they decided our guy took a slide. I thought that was the turning point in the game. Salisbury scored a few minutes after that. I felt bad for our seniors to lose this match, they all had excellent careers at Wesley."
Nick Talarico saved four shots for the Wolverines.
Greg Wellinghoff had six for Salisbury.
