Wesley Outlasts St. Mary's in Playoffs
DOVER, Del. - A goal by Omar De Los Santos in the 98th minute broke a 1-1 tie and sent Wesley College to the CAC semifinals with a 2-1 win over visiting St. Mary's (Md.).
De Los Santos (Prescott Valley, Ariz./Prescott Valley) took a long cross from Mike Thomas (Frederick, Md./Governor Thomas Johnson) stopped the ball and cranked a shot from left to right for the game-winner at 97:07 after also assisting on the game-tying goal.
Kyle Lawrence (Smyrna, Del./Smyrna) had tied the game with a header off a cross from De Los Santos just after halftime at 46:20.
The Seahawks(5-10-4) took an early 1-0 lead in the match when Zack Butcher scored off an assist from Chris Quamina at 14:33.
Goalkeeper Nick Talarico (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) made six saves for the Wolverines (11-6-2), who advance to the semifinals by defeating St. Mary's for the second straight season.
Dan Gressang made three saves for the Seahawks.
Wesley held a narrow 13-11 advantage on shots, with both teams earning three corner kicks.
The Seahawks were called for offsides seven times.
Last year's quarterfinal between the two teams went through the two overtimes and was decided on penalty kicks.
Wesley, seeded fourth in the CAC Playoffs, will have stiff challenge ahead of them. The Wolverines will travel to top seeded York (Pa.) on November 5. The Spartans are a perfect 18-0 on the season and ranked No. 2 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
