Wesley Falls in CAC Championship

Box Score

SALISBURY, Md. - No. 19 Salisbury scored three goals in the first half as the Sea Gulls shut out visiting Wesley in the Capital Athletic Conference Championship game 3-0.

Ben DeLisle scored the game-winner from the top of the box at 14:35 with an assist from Steven Merrow.

In the 29th minute, Kyle Sterling cleaned up a mess in front of the goal and made it a 2-0 game in favor of the Sea Gulls (15-3-3).  Less than five minutes later, Scott Sparrow assisted on a Chris Finney tally to make it 3-0.

Wesley's (11-7-3) Nick Talarico (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands Regional) stopped six shots in goal.

Greg Wellinghoff had three for Salisbury to pick up the shutout.

Salisbury earned the CAC's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with the victory.

Wesley, who defeated nationally ranked No. 2 York (Pa.) to get to the finals, will await word on a potential ECAC South bid.

"We were disappointed we weren't in the game longer in the beginning," Wesley Head Coach Steve Clark noted.  "Then in the second half when we had some chances, we couldn't capitalize.  It's been a learning experience for our guys, and I think Salisbury's experience helped them at the start."

The Wolverines lost just twice in five matches against nationally ranked squads in 2008, despite a roster with no seniors and just three juniors.

"We were able to beat Salisbury at home, but they beat us on their home field, so it seems our teams match up well," Clark continued.  "They played very well today and we wish them luck in the NCAAs."
