Wolverines Drop ECAC Quarterfinal Match
READING, Pa. - Top seeded Alvernia College's Josh Wollaston scored twice in the second half as the Crusaders picked up a 3-0 win over Wesley College in the ECAC Division III South Quarterfinals.
Alvernia (16-4-1) struck first as David McEwen scored off a through ball by Domenic Montone. The Wolverines (8-7-5) remained aggressive, outshooting the Crusaders 6-2 in the half, but could not find the back of the net.
Wollaston scored twice in less than five minutes early in the second half to break the game open. He took a cross from Eric Franks late in the 55th minute, then scored unassisted early in the 60th minute.
Mark Mattern (Carney, Md./Kenwood) made four saves for the Wolverines, while Ben Diller stopped as many shots for the Crusaders.
Wesley outshot Alvernia 12-10 in the contest. The Crusaders were called for offsides nine times in the contest.
The game marked the end of the 2011 season for the Wolverines. By finishing 8-7-5, Wesley turned in a winning season for the 18th time in the last 22 seasons.
The contest also marked the end of careers of seniors Kyle Long (Delaware, Ohio/Buckeye), Michael Monticchio (Middletown, Del./Middletown), Chris Phillips (Delmar, Md./Delmar), Nico Scarpato (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township), Craig Taswell (Lanham, Md./Duvall) and Thomas Yolain (Windsor Mill, Md./Randallstown).
Long scored 21 goals in his career at Wesley, tying him for seventh all-time with Derek Roberts-Dukes. His 48 career points tied Brian Jazczak for 10th all-time. Monticchio was a multi-year starter and a team captain, as was All-CAC First Team pick Scarpato. Phillips notched a pair of two goal games during his final season. Taswell earned all-region honors during his career as a standout defender and Yolain was a solid contributor during his career, emerging as a starter as a senior.
