OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The third-seeded Wesley Collee men's soccer team outlasted the host and top seed Stevenson Mustangs, 3-2 on Saturday to win their pod and advance to the Final Four of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship Tournament.
After a scoreless first half, Wesley broke the scoreless draw in the 48th minute of the game when Deekai Gbonimy capped off a counter-attack with a left-footed blast in the box into the right side of the net.
Stevenson would cut the Wesley lead in half in the 56th minute. After a great save by Springsteen on the initial Jason Kahan shot, Springsteen couldn't corral the rebound and James Rosa headed it into the open net.
In the 62nd minute, Wesley would push their lead back to two after a free kick by Garza would deflect off a Stevenson defender and into the net.
Stevenson would make a push, getting a goal in the 67th minute and getting chances late. Stevenson won a pair of corners in the 90th minute but the Wesley defense held strong to earn the win.
The midfield and defense performed well for Wesley with the quick turnaround after a double-overtime game just 18 hours prior to the start of the pod final. Springsteen made eight saves in goal for Wesley.
Wesley (16-4-1) will now wait for the other three pod winners for next weekend's semifinal rounds of the ECAC Tournament.
