Hunt Named to All-Region Team in Men's Soccer
DOVER, De. - Wesley College goalkeeper and captain Ed Hunt (SR, Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) was selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) 3rd Team All Mid-Atlantic Region for 2006.  Ed led the Wolverines to a 13-1-2 record as of October 25 before he fractured his fibula, while also being named 1st Team All-Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC).  The team was ranked regionally and poised for a run at a national championship prior to the injury. With 8 shutouts, the Wolverines were 3rd in the nation at the time and had conceded only 5 goals which also gave them a top 10 national ranking in that category.

Hunt initially demonstrated what an outstanding keeper he has become with some magnificent displays during the year. "At 6'3" he is dominant in the air, he has amazingly good hands and quick feet," noted Head Coach Steve Clark, who added, "his greatest improvement this fall, was as a leader and the confidence that he gave to the team was sorely missed during the final weeks of the season."  Hunt stepped up for the team to play injured at the end, despite the pain and accepting that his number may deteriorate and it is a great credit to him and all those involved to have still be recognized as one of the top keepers.

Wolverines Taken Out by Arcadia, 2-1
GLENSIDE, Pa. - #1 Arcadia University (10-3-5) will move on to Saturday's Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (PAC) Championship game following a 2-1 victory over #4 Wesley College (14-4-2) at Kuch Center Field on Thursday afternoon, in men's soccer action.  The Knights will play for their fourth and final PAC Championship title at 1:00 PM against #2 Alvernia College who advanced in PK's 6-5 over #3 Eastern University.  The Wolverine will now await a possible bid into the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament.
From the opening tap, the visiting Wolverines controlled the offense into the fourth minute before Arcadia midfielder Billy Cress (SR, Springfield, PA/Springfield) worked his way past three Wesley defenders before his shot was stopped by Wolverine keeper Ed Hunt (SR, Collegeville, PA/Perkiomen Valley) in the first scoring opportunity of the half.  Hunt was playing the last two games on a broken fibula and put out another strong effort for Wesley on goal.  Play transitioned between the two teams until the Wolverines matched with a scoring opportunity of their own six minutes later when Matt Doyle's (JR, Manasquan, NJ/Wall) header sailed inches above the crossbar behind Arcadia keeper Jeff Kratohwill (FR, Pennsburg, PA/Upper Perkiomen).

Scoring opportunities from that point on were hard to come by with both teams playing tight defense, however in the 13th minute of play, Arcadia Mike Filipone (SR, Philadelphia, PA/Roman Catholic) broke away from a defender and took the ball to just outside of the box before he was pulled down by the Wesley defense resulting in a penalty kick for the home team.  Matt Abate (SR, Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) stepped up for the shot and sailed the ball to left goalside, brushing the fingertips of Hunt and into the back of the net giving the Knights the 1-0 lead.  Wesley had one final chance at a the tie in the closing minutes of the half on a Joey Spino (SR, Pennsauken, NJ/Camden) breakaway that Kratohwill charged at and turned aside to keep Wesley off the board.

Wesley came out strong in the opening minutes of the second half and following a scramble in front of the net with Kratohwill down, Doyle recovered the ball and slipped it past the keeper at 46:11 to knot the game at 1 apiece.  Again, the tight defense took over from both ends before the game's next scoring opportunity occurred in the 66th minute off the foot of Wesley CJ Twombly (JR, Pasadena, MD/Northeast) who sailed another Wolverine shot just inches over the crossbar.

Ten minutes would go by before the Knights would rebound with a chance of their own.  Following an AU corner kick and throw in, the Knights were awarded another corner opportunity with Abate stepping up for the service.  The senior served a high ball into Andrew Plunkett (JR, Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) who nailed the header down into the short corner past Hunt for the go-ahead goal that turned out to be the game-winner.

The Wolverines made attempts at a score in the remaining minutes of play but were stonewalled by Kratohwill.  Spino played two shots into Kratohwill in the 86th minute that the rookie keeper turned aside and Wesley's Andrew Tescione (SR, Lynnfield, MA/Bridgeton Academy) sent in a far side free kick that Kratohwill saved to preserve the one goal victory.  Kratohwill notched 6 saves to Hunt's 5 with Wesley earning the small advantage in shots on goal 6-5.

Wesley Wants "Big Time" for 2006
DOVER, De. - When you lose four seniors - a leader at the back and the three top scorers- the pressure is on to recruit players who must be ready technically, physically and mentally to contribute as freshmen.

Wesley College has become a program that is fighting for the top accolades at Div 3 and is in search of players who are going to have an impact in their first year with the program. The expectations for the team will be as high as ever, the bar has been raised with the football program just falling one game short of competing on ESPN for the NCAA national championship, and this coming on the heels of Wesley Soccer's own achievements in recent seasons. We have one of the best facilities in the region and with the growth of the college we are in a good situation to attract the top recruits and help us to ensure that we compete for a championship in 2006 and beyond.

Wesley's two starting forwards of the past three seasons, Myers and Zimmer, finished number 2 and 3 on the all time scoring list at the college. At this level speed is crucial for breaking down opponents but you also need forwards who can play with their back to the goal, and be a physical presence in the air. "Our two lads did that very well. Their tenacity and unselfish play enabled both of them to be a problem for defenses in every game"

Or team style has developed into being a major offensive threat and Wesley wants to become even more dangerous on the wings.  As we observed last season, you also need depth to counter any injuries that occur, and it is important have the confidence in the players coming off the bench to do a great job.  Photo: Adrian Parkes

Senior Zimmer headed to Australia
DOVER, De. - Senior striker Trevor Zimmer is off down under to Australia, departing early February for a semester at University of the Sunshine Coast.  Trevor, a liberal arts major, hopes to play soccer in Australia during his time there. After defeating Uruguay in the World Cup qualifier the Aussies will be making their first World Cup appearance in 30 years.

Trevor an All PAC player in each season, finished # 3 on the college's all time goal scoring list. He is one of those players that we must recruit hard to replace" noted Coach Clark, "he is a physical presence up front, and can hold the ball well and then of course score goals."   Zimmer has scored with both his feet and head, one of his best goals coming this season against Gwynedd College, a thunderous header off a Spagnolo cross. "I think several of the Queensland clubs will be interested in Trevor and it will be exciting to see how he does in Australia, and I hope will lead to more of our players looking at opportunities to study abroad and play soccer."
