Steve Pickering has been the head cross country coach at Wesley since 2001, before adding the title of head track & field coach in 2007-08 when the program ascended to varsity status.
He has coached his cross country runners to 16 all-conference honors and an individual conference champion. In just three years, his track & field athletes have produced an All-American, 43 all-conference honors, including five individual conference champions and a conference rookie of the year.
Pickering coached the 2011 women's track & field team to a fourth place finish at the Capital Athletic Conference Championships, the best finish in program history.
His 2009-10 teams produced 26 all-conference honors in track & field between the CAC and Mason Dixon Conferences. The women's track & field team produced more CAC Athlete of the Week award winners than the rest of the conference combined.
His 2009 track & field team earned six all-conference honors and produced CAC Champions in the 200-meters and the long jump, where the Wolverines had the top three finishers. Sophomore Chris Donisi earned All-America status, finishing eighth in Division III in long jump and winning championships at both the Capital Athletic Conference and Mason Dixon Conference Championships. Senior Larry Beavers qualified for both the NCAA Division III Indoor and Outdoor Championships. In all, his men's team established 13 school records, while four new standards were set on the women's side.
In the track & field's first varsity season in 2008, his athletes earned eight All-CAC honors. He also coached he Capital Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year, Larry Beavers. He also coached both Beavers and Ashley Cox to track & field athlete of the week honors, after Joleen Schilling earned a pair on the cross country course in the fall.
Pickering has been the cross country coach since the program's third season. His runners have earned 16 all-conference honors, and he coached the 2001 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Champion, Angela Brown. He coached the women to three straight third place finishes in the PAC in his first three seasons and led the men to a runner up finish in 2002.
After graduating from Dover High School, in Dover, Delaware,
Pickering attended Campbell University in North Carolina where he
received a Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education.
Pickering was cross country and track coach at Dover High School
from 1990 to 1996. During his tenure he received State of Delaware
Coach of the Year Honors for Girls Indoor Track in 1993, 1994 and
1995 as well as for Boys Indoor Track in 1995.
Prior to coming to Wesley, Pickering was the assistant cross
country and track coach at Delaware State University from 1997 to
2000.
Since 1996, Pickering has been employed by the City of Dover where
he is the Sports Coordinator for the Parks and Recreation
Department.
