Wesley Splits with Widener
DOVER, Del. - A two-run single by Marie Elzey in the third inning of game two broke a 1-1 tie and lifted Wesley College to a 3-1 win and a split against visiting Widener University.
Game One:
Widener scored four times in the fifth to capture a 10-2 win over
Wesley in game one.
Leading 6-0, Rachel O'Leary, Meg Phillips and Christine Bradley all had run scoring hits in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 10-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Wesley battled back with a pair of scores on a two-run double by Kelly Caton, but could get no closer.
Caton had two hits in the game for the Wolverines.
Stephanie Caulford had two hits and scored three times for the Pride.
Game Two:
Widener tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third, but
Elzey stroked a two-run single with two outs in the bottom half of
the frame to lead Wesley to a 3-1 win.
Elzey was also stellar inside the pitching circle for the Wolverines, holding the Pride to just two runs through six innings, scattering eight hits. Jessica Morgan pitched a 1-2-3 seventh for the save.
Wesley took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI triple by Caton that scored Lyndsey Ellsworth. The Pride tied it two innings later when Trina Menta scored on a ground out.
After Elzey's two-run base hit to help her own cause, Widener got a run back in the top of the fourth on a triple by O'Leary.
Widener put runners on second and third in the sixth with no one out, but Elzey induced a fielder's choice to cut down Steph Connolley at home. The senior then notched her fourth strikeout of the game and got a pop up for the final out to pitch her way out of the jam.
Caton had her second two-hit game of the afternoon.
O'Leary led all players with three hits. Connelley had two hits in the game.
Mallory Meyer took the loss, allowing two earned runs over six innings. She struck out five and allowed seven hits.
The win snapped a seven game losing streak. Wesley improved to 4-20 on the year, while Widener dropped to 19-9.
The Wolverines are back in action on Friday, April 11 when Gallaudet visits DuPont Field.
