Wolverines Sweep Gallaudet

DOVER, Del. - Wesley used a seven-run sixth inning to come from behind and preserve a doubleheader sweep over visiting Gallaudet in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action.

Game One:
Wesley scored twice in the first inning and held on for a 4-2 win in the opener.

In the first inning, Marie Elzey brought home a run with a fielder's choice and a ground ball to third off the bat of Shirelle Tingle made it 2-0.

The Bison threatened in the top of the fifth, loading the bases against Jessica Morgan with two outs.  The senior struck out Keri Schmidt looking to end the threat, however.

Michele Mules' grounder to third brought home Elzey in the bottom of the inning to make it 3-0.

Gallaudet scored on infield singles by Rachael Robbins and Amanda Smith in the sixth inning to make it 3-2 heading into the seventh.  Lyndsey Ellsworth tripled to lead off the bottom of the inning and scored on a single by Morgan to make it 4-2.

Morgan pitched a 1-2-3 seventh to preserve the victory.  The senior struck out 10 and scattered eight hits to pick up her third win of the season.

She also collected two hits in the game, as did Ellsworth, Street and Elzey.

Colleen Tighe took the loss, surrendering four runs on 10 hits and four walks.  Caitlin Mosholder had a pair of hits for the Bison.

Game Two:
Trailing 3-2 in the sixth, the Wolverines batted around, scoring seven runs on six hits to pull out a 9-3 win and capture their third straight win.

After Shirelle Tingle tripled and scored in the bottom of the second, Gallaudet scored three times in the top of the third to take a 3-1 lead.  Kallie Williams doubled in a run and Hower ripped a two-run double  to fuel the Bison attack.

Gallaudet put runners on second and third with one out the following inning, but Megan Street fanned Alicia Balzer and Schmidt to pitch her way out of the jam.

The Wolverines got one run back in the fifth, when Ellsworth doubled in Michele Mules to cut it to 3-2.

The following inning, Elzey knocked in Kelly Caton to tie the game with no one out.  The winning run also scored on the play, when right fielder Virginia Keeler over ran the ball, allowing Megan Street to score to make it 4-3.  An error by third baseman Colleen Caverly allowed a fifth run to score, before Wesley ripped off three straight extra base hits to break the game open.

Ellsworth doubled in Sue Goines to make it 6-3.  Morgan stroked a two-run triple and Caton followed with another three-bagger to bring in Morgan.

Street struck out two batters in the seventh to finish off the Bison.  She picked up her second win of the season, striking out eight.

Ellsworth, Caton and Elzey had two hits apiece and eight different Wesley players had hits in the game.

Owens took the loss for the Bison.  She gave up all nine runs, only three of which were earned.

The wins improved Wesley to 6-20 on the season as the Wolverines completed their first CAC conference slate with a 4-8 record.  Gallaudet fell to 5-18-1 and is now 0-10 in CAC contests.

Wesley is back in action on Sunday, April 13, when the Wolverines travel to Rutgers Camden for a non-conference doubleheader.
