Wesley Swept at Rutgers-Camden
CAMDEN, N.J. - A pair of big first innings by Rutgers-Camden doomed Wesley College on the road in non-conference softball action as the Wolverines fell 6-0 and 8-3.
Game One:
The Scarlet Raptors scored four runs in the first and Natalie
Powell did not allow a hit until the fourth inning as Wesley
dropped the opener, 6-0.
Rutgers Camden put its first run on the scoreboard with a single by Kathleen Dreitlein and plated three more via a fielder's choice, a ground out and a Wolverine throwing error.
The Scarlet Raptors threatened in each of the next two innings as well, getting runners in scoring position with one out both at bats. Wesley starter Marie Elzey, however, got out of both jams unscathed.
Powell, meanwhile, kept Wesley off balance until the fourth inning. Kelly Caton singled and a base hit by Jessica Morgan put a pair of runners on base with two outs. The junior hurler ended the threat with a one of her five strikeouts on the afternoon.
In the bottom of the inning, Rutgers Camden added runs on hits by Stephanie Klotz and Steph Skroski to extend the lead to 6-0.
Powell tossed a four-hit shutout for the win.
Jessica Morgan had two of Wesley's four hits.
Skroski and Dreitlein had two hits apiece for Rutgers Camden.
Elzey allowed six runs on nine hits, but did not walk a batter and struck out four.
Game Two:
Rutgers Camden scored five in the first, then outlasted the
Wolverines for an 8-3 win.
Klotz led off the bottom of the first and moved around the bases on a pair of passed balls and a wild pitch. Amanda D'Anduono, Valeri Bohn, and Ashley McDonald followed with three straight RBI hits stretch the lead to 5-0.
An RBI single by Sue Goines cut it to 5-1 after the top of the second as Morgan scored for Wesley. The Wolverines got within two in the fourth, scoring two more runs on an error by the Scarlet Raptors.
Skroski and Dreitlein got the runs back in the bottom of the frame with a pair of run scoring hits to make it a 7-3 ballgame.
An RBI fielder's choice by Klotz in the fifth put the game out of reach.
Street and Goines had two hits apiece for the Wolverines. Street also tossed a complete game for Wesley. She allowed 11 hits and walked six, while striking out one.
Skroski picked up the win and had two hits at the plate. She struck out four Wesley batters, allowing four hits and two walks in 5.1 innings. Powell finished the game with two innings of scoreless relief.
Brooke Keenan, Skroski and Bohn all had two hits in the win.
Wesley fell to 6-22 on the year, while Rutgers Camden improved to 5-21-1.
The Wolverines travel to Hood for the first round of the CAC playoffs on Tuesday, April 15 at 4:30 PM.
