Long Ball Powers Wesley in CAC Playoffs
FREDERICK, Va. - Lyndsey Ellsworth and Megan Street both homered in the top of the seventh as Wesley College won the first Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) postseason softball game in school history with a 6-2 win at Hood in first round action.
The Wolverines had entered the game with just two home runs in the first 28 games of the season.
Wesley (7-22) scored three runs in the third inning to take a 3-0 lead. Ellsworth reached on a error and scored on another for the Wolverines first run of the inning. Megan Street followed with a run scoring single and Jessica Morgan doubled in Kelly Caton to cap the inning.
Sara Wastler got Hood (15-12) on the board in the bottom of the inning. She singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and scored on an error as the Blazers made it a 3-1 game.
Hood got within a run on an RBI double by Alecia Weddle that scored Jen Willison.
The score stayed that way until Wesley's turn at bat in the seventh. Ellsworth hit her first homer of the season over the fence in left field to give the Wolverines a 4-2 lead with one out. Then with two outs, Street homered to centerfield, her second of the year, to score Caton and give Wesley a 6-2 lead.
Morgan, in addition to her RBI double, pitched a complete game to improve to 4-4 on the year. She allowed just one earned run and struck out eight, while scattering six hits and a pair of walks.
Street finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Caton had a pair of hits and scored twice, whlie Michele Mules went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Jamie Gardner took the loss to fall to 12-12. Wastler had a pair of hits for the Blazers.
Wesley is in its first year in the CAC after spending the previous 10 years as a member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference.
With the win, the Wolverines will head to top seeded Salisbury for a second round contest on Thursday, April 17. The top two seeds in the tournament earned byes in Tuesday's opening round. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
