Wesley Drops Pair of Close Games

Box Scores:  Game One | Game Two

CHESTER, Pa. - Widener needed a pair of runs in the sixth inning in the opener and two in the bottom of the seventh in the nightcap to sweep a doubleheader from Wesley College.

Caitlin Callahan drove in a pair of runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie in the opener.

The Wolverines had tied the game with three runs in the fifth and another in the top of the sixth.  Keeyana Talley (Westampton, N.J./Rancocas Valley) led off the fifth with a double and scored on an error before RBI singles by Lyndsey Ellsworth (Georgetown, Del./Sussex Tech) and Nikki Barton (Harrington, Del./Lake Forest) made it 5-4.  Kim Fearnbach (Pennington, N.J./Hopewell Valley Central) tied the game the next inning when she drove home Talley with a single.

The Pride jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, powered by a two-run homer by Krista Cesarine.

Megan Street (Bridgeville, Del./Epworth Christian) got a run back for Wesley with a run scoring base hit in the second, but Widener got the run back on a Wolverine error in the fourth.

Eight different players had hits for Wesley, led by Michele Mules (York, Pa./Susquehannock) with two.

Callahan was one of three Widener players with two hits and drove in three runs.

Emily Donnelly picked up the win, allowing one run in two innings of relief.

Street tossed a complete game, but took the loss.

Wesley led in the second game, 6-5, but RBI singles by Rachel O'Leary and Katie Mitchell earned Widener the sweep.

The Wolverines jumped ahead 2-0 in the first on back-to-back RBI doubles by Barton and Carmen Walsh (Rehoboth Beach, Del./St.Marks).  The Pride cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, but Street led off the second with a home run to stretch the lead back to two at 3-1.

Steph Connolley's second RBI single of the game inched the Pride to within 3-2 after three innings.

Ellsworth drove home a run in the top of the fifth inning for Wesley before Widener used three hits and two errors to score three runs in the bottom half for a 5-4 lead.

The Wolverines were not done, however, as Talley ripped a two-run single up the middle in the sixth to take back the lead for Wesley.

Callahan led off the seventh with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice and scored on a single by O'Leary.   An error with two outs extended the inning and the next batter, Mitchell, drilled a walk off single.

Kelsy Shultz picked up the win in relief, allowing just two hits in 1.2 innings.

Street tossed her second complete game of the day in the losing effort.  She and Barton had two hits apiece for the Wolverines.

Wesley has a day off before traveling to Gallaudet for a Capital Athletic Conference twinbill on Friday, April 10.
