Dalious homers twice against Neumann, Softball clinches fifth seed in Atlantic East Tournament

ASTON, Pa. – The Wesley College softball team dropped an Atlantic East Conference doubleheader to the first-place Neumann Knights on Tuesday.

Game 1 – Neumann 9, Wesley 1 (5 inn.)

Brandi Dalious hit a solo bomb in the first inning of the game, but Wesley couldn't string any offense together in the opening game of the day.

Megan DiRubbio went 2-for-3 at the top of the lineup while Gabriella Monzo notched a hit in two at-bats.

Grace Sperrazza paced Neumann with three hits.

Game 2 – Neumann 7, Wesley 6

Wesley put together a late rally to tie the game in the seventh inning, but Neumann walked off winners in the bottom of the seventh to pick up the doubleheader sweep.

After Neumann took an early 2-0 lead, Wesley cut the lead in half in the third inning when Megan DiRubbio scored from third on a wild pitch. Neumann responded with four runs in the fourth inning off Grace Sperrazza's grand slam.

Amanda Curry came around to score from second base on a single by DiRubbio and an error by the Neumann second baseman to trim the Neumann lead to 6-2 in the sixth inning.

Wesley started to rally in the seventh inning when Brandi Dalious opened the inning with a solo shot to left field. After Miranda Kinney doubled to right center, Dori Loukopoulos walked and Brooke Retkowski loaded the bases with a single down the left field line, Karina Cardona brought home Kinney on an RBI groundout to the shortstop. A batter later, Curry smacked a two-run single to left field to clear the bases and tie the game at six.

Neumann would take the 7-6 win in the bottom of the seventh inning when Sperrazza scored on an infield single by Jackie Schneider.

Dalious went 3-for-4 with her fifth home run of the season and a double. DiRubbio and Curry each collected two hits in the game while Curry drove in a pair of runs.

Wesley (16-20, 3-7 Atlantic East) qualified for the Atlantic East Conference Tournament as the fifth seed. Wesley will be in a pod with the second-seeded and host Immaculata Mighty Macs and the third-seeded Cabrini Cavaliers. Wesley will open the tournament against Immaculata on Friday, April 26 at 12 p.m. The winner of the pod will play the winner of the other pod with the first, fourth and sixth seeds in the Atlantic East Conference Championship the weekend of May 3-4.
