Team Effort Leads Wolverines Past Blazers

FREDERICK, Md. - Cory Boyd, Colleen Thomas and Michele Mules led the offense, while Herbie Rayne and Angie Owens stood out on defense as Wesley College picked up a 72-64 win at Hood in Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) action.

Boyd had her second consecutive 10-assist game and added 15 points for her second career double-double.  The freshman guard hit 5-of-10 from the floor, including three threes.  Thomas shot 9-of-15 from the floor for a team-high 19 points and dished out a season-high five assists.  Mules added 15 points.

On the defensive end, Rayne grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds and tied a team season-high with six steals.  Owens blocked six shots, twice as many as the previous team season-best.

The Wolverines (12-11, 8-6 CAC) went on a 13-2 run that ended with back-to-back threes by Mules and gave Wesley a  27-12 lead with 10:14 left in the half.  Hood (4-18, 2-12 CAC) chipped away at the lead over the final 10 minutes, however, and trailed by just 34-31 at the half.

In the second half, Wesley's lead climbed back to 10, 52-42, before nine straight Blazer points slashed the deficit to just a single point with 7:26 to go.  A three-point play by Mules ended the run and the Wolverines hit 5-of-6 free throws in the final 30 seconds to end any chance of a Hood comeback.

Jenn Willison had 21 points and 17 rebounds for the Blazers, but shot just 6-of-20 from the floor.

Boyd and Mules had three steals apiece as the Wolverines forced Hood into 24 turnovers, while committing just 11 of their own.

Wesley returns home to host No. 4 Mary Washington on Wednesday, February 20 at 6:00 PM.
