Women's Hoops fall to St. Mary's
Dover, Del. - Collen Thomas scored 27, but the Wesley College Women's Basketball team dropped their second straight Capital Athletic Conference game falling to St. Mary's(MD) 79-71 in front of the home crowd at Wentworth Gymnasium.
The St. Mary's (18-7, 11-6 CAC) Seahawks opened the game with a 10-0 run putting early pressure on the Wolverines. Wesley's Angie Ownen scored the Wolverines first points of the game at 16:09 on a fastbreak layup. Owens then helped Wesley (12-13, 8-8 CAC) inch back in the half by scoring 12.
Wesley guard Corey Boyd brought the Wolverines to within one point by hitting a three pointer with 51 second left in the half.
Collen Thomas continued to be a force for the Wolverine scoring 12 in the first half and grabbing four boards.
Down 34-33 coming out of the locker room, Wesley continued to battle in the second half, even tying the score at 44 on a jumper by Thomas at 16:14.
However, the Seahawks continued to run the court with guard Steph Saint-Aubin in control. After running up 12 points in the first half Saint-Aubin added 15 more in the second.
With the help of fellow Seahawk Tiara Hurte, St. Mary's was able to open up leads as much as 16 on Wesley. Hurte and Allie Scott both finished with 14 points for the Seahawks.
Wesley's Colleen Thomas matched Saint-Aubin with 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for a double-double. After scoring 12 in the first half, Owens was only able to add 4 more in the second finishing with 16 on the day. Guard Latasha Torres added 12 and dished out 7 assists.
The Wolverines are the 5th seed in the Capital Athletic Conference tournament set to start Tuesday, February 26. Wesley will play at York College, PA who is the 4th seed. Game time 6:00 p.m.
