Season Opener Spoiled at No. 9 DeSales
CENTER VALLEY, Pa. - Wesley's Angie Owens and Colleen Thomas combined for 33 points, but the rest of the team managed just 20 more as the Wolverines were overpowered 93-53 by No. 9 DeSales in Wesley's season opener.
The two combined to hit 14-of-22 field goals as they tried to keep pace with the Bulldog duo of Kim Rarick and LeighAnn Burke. Owens hit 9-of-12 field goals for 20 points and dominated the lane, grabbing 12 rebounds and blocking four shots. Thomas scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting and 3-of-6 from beyond the arc.
Burke and Rarick, meanwhile, combined for 44 points on 13-of-27 shooting. The pair also hit 12-of-12 from the line to lead a DeSales (3-0) team that made 24-of-25 in the contest. Burke hit 7-of-16 shots for a game-high 22 with 3-of-6 shooting from distance. Rarick shot 6-for-11 and went 7-of-7 from the line for 20 points and also had four steals.
Wesley (0-1) was hounded all evening by turnover problems giving the ball up 29 times in the contest. The end result was a 34-6 deficit in points off turnovers. Wesley also received just two points from its bench, a pair of free throws by Latasha Torres, compared to 21 for the Bulldogs.
The Wolverines led early 3-2 after an Owens layup, but a 23-5 run broke the game open and DeSales led 47-24 at the break.
Another Owens bucket in the paint cut it to 17 with 14:50 to go, 58-41. Less than a minute later, a three by Burke started a 24-2 run that put the game away.
Owens double-double was the third of her career.
Wesley will look to regroup on Saturday when they face Staten Island in the opening round of the Rinso Marquette Tournament at Lebanon Valley College. Tip-off is set for 8:00 PM.
