Wesley Falls in Overtime
ANNVILLE, Pa. - Staten Island's Megan Sullivan had 24 points and 24 rebounds as Wesley College dropped a 73-67 final in overtime at the Rinso Marquette Tournament at Lebanon Valley College.
The Wolverines (0-2) were led by sophomore forward Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) who turned in her second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 boards. She filled up the stat sheet, adding three blocks and four steals in the contest.
Owens' 7-of-10 shooting made her one of few accurate shooters on a night when the two teams combined to hit 51-of-157 shots (.325). The end result saw Staten Island (2-2) hold a 72-44 advantage on the glass, including 34 offensive rebounds for the Dolphins.
Wesley trailed by two with 1:53 to go in the first half, but rallied to claim a 30-29 advantage at the half after a layup and three by Latasha Torres (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park). Torres hit 5-of-8 shots in the contest to finish with 12 points and also had five rebounds and three assists.
In the second half, the Wolverines led 43-40 before a three by Cory Boyd ignited a 12-3 run that stretched the lead to a dozen, 55-43 with 6:06 left after a Torres lay in.
A free throw by Sullivan tied the game at 58-58 with 1:20 remaining, but Torres collected the rebound off her own miss and Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) scored to put the Wolverines back in front with 1:09 left.
Allie Shanahan hit a three with 51 seconds to play and one of two free throws with 39 ticks left to put the Dolphins ahead 62-60 before Colleen Thomas (Howell, N.J./Howell) answered back with at three of her own for a 63-62 Wesley lead with only 10 seconds left.
Staten Island's Melanie D'Ambrosi missed a three with five seconds left, but Sullivan grabbed the rebound and was fouled with one second remaining. The forward missed the first free throw, but sent the game to overtime with the second to tie it at 63-63.
The Dolphins scored overtime's first eight points to take command of the game. The Wolverines got as close as four, 71-67, after a lay up by Boyd with 22 seconds to go, but a jumper in the paint by Nicole Estrada iced the game.
Four Staten Island players finished with double figures in rebounds including Sullivan. Estrada joined Sullivan with a double-double after scoring 10 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. D'Ambrosi had 11 rebounds, while Kristen Panariello had 14. Shanahan added 11 points.
Thomas scored 16 points in the game to lead Wesley and also had eight boards. Boyd had 13 points, dished out nine assists and had three steals.
With the loss, Wesley will face Centenary (N.J.) in the consolation game of the Rinso Marquette Tournament at 1:00 PM on Sunday, November 23.
