Owens All-Tourney; Wesley Wins
ANNVILLE, Pa. - Angie Owens turned in another monster effort with 23 points, 17 rebounds and four blocked shots as Wesley College notched its first win 76-68 over Centenary (N.J.) at the Rinso Marquette Tournament.
Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) turned in her third double-double with at least four blocks as she hit 11-of-16 field goals and notched two steals to earn a place on the All-Tournament team.
The Cyclones (2-2) got a big day from their top forward, Nikki Van Tassel. She tallied 19 points and 21 rebounds, but fouled out with 2:34 left.
With Centenary leading 20-19 with 9:19 to go in the first half, a lay up by Maddie Demetor (Milltown, N.J./Bishop George Ahr) sparked a 17-1 run that put the Wolverines (1-2) up 36-21 with 2:56 to play before the intermission. The Wesley defense forced the Cyclones to miss 12 consecutive field goals, while Centenary was also only able to hit 1-of-6 free throws during the run as well.
After the Cyclones cut the lead to eight, a three from Ambre Burbage (Seaford, Del./Seaford ) gave Wesley a 39-28 lead at the break.
The Wolverines increased the lead to as many as 20, 50-30, after a bucket by Owens with 16:01 to go in the game. The Cyclones battled back, however, with a 29-8 run capped by a Van Tassel field goal to put Centenary in the lead 59-58 with 6:39 remaining.
That lead lasted just 17 seconds before Owens erased it with a lay up with an assist from Stephanie Bailey (Kensington, Md./Walter Johnson) and the Wolverines never trailed again.
Colleen Thomas (Howell, N.J./Howell) also turned in a strong shooting performance for Welsey, hitting 7-of-10 field goals and a pair of threes on her way to 18 points. The junior also grabbed six rebounds and had four steals.
Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) reached double figures with 13 points and Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) grabbed 10 rebounds and blocked a pair of shots.
Wesley shot 15-of-28 in the second half to finish at 47 percent in the game. Centenary, meanwhile, hit only 35 percent of its field goals, while going an icy 1-of-18 from three point range.
The Cyclones stayed in the game by forcing 32 Wesley turnovers. Kristen Camuso had six steals and Jen Vasta added four.
In addition to Owens, Melanie D'Ambrosie (Staten Island), Vasta, Andrea Hoover (LVC) and Megan Bish (LVC) were named to the All-Tournament team. Staten Island's Megan Sullivan was named the MVP.
The Wolverines will travel to Rowan for an 8:00 PM game on November 25.
