Wesley Herds Bison, 86-41
DOVER, Del. - The Wesley College women's basketball team started Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) play in style with an 86-41 win in its home opener against visiting Gallaudet.
Wesley's (2-5, 1-0 CAC) defense forced 27 Gallaudet turnovers and used the long ball to their advantage. The Wolverines drained 13 from beyond the arc, while the Bison (3-3, 0-2 CAC) made only 18 total field goals in the contest.
The Wolverines placed five scorers in double figures, led by Colleen Thomas (Howell, N.J./Howell) with 19. The junior hit 5-of-10 threes in the game, making more from long distance than the Bison, who went just 1-of-3 from beyond the arc, attempted in the contest. With five of Wesley's 18 steals, she also matched Gallaudet's output in that department.
Angie Owens (Seaford, Del./Seaford) and Cory Boyd (Point Pleasant, N.J./Point Pleasant) each had double-doubles in the contest. Owens scored 17 points and grabbed 16 rebounds in the contest. Boyd scored 14 points and dished out 10 assists.
Allison Beddia (New Castle, Del./Delcastle) had her best game as a Wolverine, scoring 15 points - all in the first half - to go along with seven rebounds and three steals.
Latasha Torres (Sharon Hill, Pa./Academy Park) came off the bench to score 11 points on 3-of-4 from distance.
After the Bison's Brittany Paine opened the game with a bucket, the Wolverines reeled off 12 straight points to take command of the game. Gallaudet would cut it to eight at 16-8 after a lay up by Ursa Rewolinski with 12:38 left in the half, but the Wolverines then went on an 18-5 to take a 34-13 lead with just under 5:00 left in the half.
Wesley continued to expand the lead and went into halftime with a 46-21 advantage, powered by all 15 of Beddia's points.
Gallaudet struck first in the second half, but Wesley then strung together eight straight points, including six by Thomas, to give the Wolverines a 55-22 lead with 16:25 to go in the game.
The Bison never got closer than 27 the rest of the way, and when they did, the Wolverines answered with a 15-0 run capped by back-to-back threes by Torres.
Gallaudet's Nukeitra Hayes filled the stat sheet with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocks.
The Wolverines won the battle on the glass for the first time in 2008-09, 49-39.
Wesley is now idle until hosting the Wesley Classic on December 28-30.
